Exeter museum masterplan unveiled
Designed by Allies and Morrison, a £10m scheme combining a contemporary new extension with refurbishment of existing Victorian galleries has just started construction in Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery. The redevelopment, commissioned by Exeter City Council, is designed to transform the Grade listed buildings into accommodation that fully meets modern standards. A new 400 sq. metre extension will provide increased display areas to complement the existing temporary exhibition facilities. There will also be a new shop, café and learning facilities. The project also involves the reconfiguration of the museum’s permanent collection, designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates. Original vaulted gallery ceilings will be revealed and complemented by new lighting.
Central to the project is a striking new footbridge on the edge of the museum site that will establish new pedestrian links to the surrounding historic landscape and buildings. Allies and Morrison’s design has been developed in consultation with English Heritage and Exeter Archaeology. It is due for completion by mid 2010.
